Sam Altman: The goal is to have automated AI research interns by 2026 and achieve true automated AI researchers by 2028.

We may completely fail to achieve this goal, but given its potential huge impact, maintaining openness and transparency is in the public interest. The non-profit organization can now deploy funds relatively quickly. In 2026, OpenAI expects that AI systems may be able to make small new discoveries; by 2028, there may be significant discoveries. This is very important; OpenAI believes that science, and the institutions that make scientific achievements widely beneficial to society, are the most important means of improving quality of life.
