The largest oil field in Libya, the Sharara oil field, was forced to gradually reduce production over the weekend and fully shut down on Monday, according to two sources familiar with the operation. The oil field received an order to cut production last Saturday, and the reason for the reduction is still unclear. The Libyan government said on Sunday that the closure of the project was “political blackmail,” but did not provide details. Some local media quoted a letter from Akakus Oil, the operator of the oil field, stating that the reason for the closure of the Sharara oil field was protests related to improving socio-economic conditions. Other news outlets attribute this to Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of military strongman Khalifa Haftar, who leads the Libyan National Army that controls most of the eastern and southern regions and has imposed blockades in the region in recent years.
