On January 30, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that the government has officially acquired legal ownership of more than $400 million in assets related to the dark web cryptocurrency mixing service Helix, including cryptocurrencies, real estate and cash assets. On January 21, District of Columbia District Court Judge Beryl A. Howell signed the final forfeiture order. Operated by Larry Dean Harmon, Helix processed approximately 354,468 Bitcoin (valued at approximately $300 million at the time) transactions between 2014 and 2017, primarily serving the money laundering needs of dark web drug dealers. Harmon pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering in August 2021 and was sentenced to 36 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and forfeiture of assets in November 2024.
