Robert Mitchnick, head of digital assets at BlackRock, believes that staking could be a “big step change” for Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and could potentially rekindle investor interest in the asset class.
Speaking at the Digital Asset Summit held in New York, Mitchnick pointed out regulatory barriers as a significant factor limiting the adoption of the ETH ETF.
Since their launch in July 2024, Ethereum ETFs have struggled to gain traction compared to the explosive growth of Bitcoin ETFs. Mitchnick attributed this disparity to a common misconception regarding their success. However, he acknowledged that the inability of ETH ETFs to generate staking yields is a critical limitation holding them back.
Mitchnick stated, “Clearly there is a next step in the potential development of Ethereum ETFs” and added: “It has become evident that the ETF is indeed a very attractive tool for holding Bitcoin for many different types of investors. There is no doubt that today it is less perfect without staking for ETH. The staking yield is a meaningful part of how you can obtain investment returns in this area, and there was no staking in all ETH ETFs when they were launched.”
Staking allows investors to earn passive returns by locking their cryptocurrency assets on the network for a specific period. However, the complexities in legal regulations make the integration of staking into ETFs a challenging endeavor.
Mitchnick said, “This is not particularly an easy issue,” and added, “It’s not as simple as a new administration giving the green light to something and then boom, we are all good, heading for a record. There are quite a few complex challenges that need to be addressed, but if this can be solved, it will be a step up in terms of seeing what the activity around these products looks like.”
Despite the current challenges, Mitchnick remains optimistic about the long-term potential of Ethereum.
