OpenAI turns ChatGPT into a "business machine" with the launch of GPT-5.2

Just a few weeks after the previous upgrade, OpenAI is shifting ChatGPT from a general entertainment tool to a key platform for businesses. On Thursday, the company launched GPT-5.2 — a new language model that is faster, more stable, and designed for complex professional workflows.

OpenAI states that GPT-5.2 outperforms in spreadsheet creation, slide making, coding, image analysis, long-form text processing, tool calling, and multi-step projects. This move demonstrates the ambition to make ChatGPT a daily work tool in enterprises, following major agreements with the US Government and Disney.

OpenAI introduces a new proprietary evaluation suite, GDPval, simulating tasks across 44 industries. According to the company, GPT-5.2 achieves or surpasses human performance in approximately 71% of comparisons.

Fidji Simo, CEO of OpenAI’s Applications division, said on X that the “thinking” version beats or matches experts in 70.9% of common office tasks. However, it is not yet clear whether GDPval has been independently evaluated.

GPT-5.2 is now available on all paid plans, with the API also launching immediately. Developers can choose from three variants:

  • Instant – for quick, simple tasks
  • Thinking – for complex, multi-step processes
  • Pro – the most powerful version for research and long-term projects

API pricing: $1.75 per 1 million input tokens and $14 per 1 million output tokens.

OpenAI states that GPT-5.2 scores higher on evaluation benchmarks such as GPQA Diamond and FrontierMath, and shows significant improvements in demanding tasks like programming, data analysis, and experimental design.

Although initial feedback has been very positive, the release of GPT-5.2 comes at a time when workers are concerned about AI. A survey by Just Capital shows that 93% of business leaders view AI positively, but nearly half of Americans fear this technology will replace jobs — a concern rarely acknowledged by leaders.

Overall, GPT-5.2 marks OpenAI’s most significant step in making ChatGPT a core tool for enterprise productivity.
