On April 29, OpenAI officially announced that users will soon be able to purchase products through ChatGPT, launching an AI search query shopping button for all users, regardless of whether they are logged in. Shoppers will not be able to check out within ChatGPT and will be redirected to the merchant’s website to complete the transaction. The product recommendations shown to potential shoppers by OpenAI are based on ChatGPT’s memory of user preferences and product reviews extracted from across the web. A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that no affiliate marketing revenue will be charged for purchases made through ChatGPT.
