According to sources familiar with the situation, Indian port authorities on Thursday refused to allow an aging tanker carrying Russian crude oil to enter the country, citing insufficient documentation, in an unusual move that India has stepped up scrutiny of ships carrying Russian oil. India is the largest buyer of seaborne Russian crude. As the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer, India imports about 35% of its total crude oil imports from Russia in 2024. The Tanzanian-flagged Andaman Skies, carrying about 100,000 mt (about 800,000 barrels) of Vallandai Russian crude sold by Lukoil from the northern port of Murmansk, was heading to the port of Wadinal to prepare for shipments to India’s state-owned refiner, the sources said, shipping data said.
