Nationwide petition referendum! Switzerland once again proposes to include BTC in national currency reserves
At the end of December 2024, the Swiss Federal Chancellery launched a constitutional proposal that requires the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to include Bitcoin in its currency reserves. Supporters of the proposal must collect over 100,000 signatures by June 30, 2026, in order to initiate a nationwide referendum.
Bitcoin think tank collaborates with supporters to promote
The proposal was initiated by Giw Zanganeh, Vice President of Tether Energy and Mining, along with Yves Bennaïm, founder and chairman of the Swiss Bitcoin non-profit think tank 2B4CH, and 8 other Bitcoin supporters. Bennaïm stated that the initial proposal in October 2021 failed to obtain 100,000 signatures from Swiss citizens within 18 months; and this time, 2B4CH has started preparing relevant documents to be submitted to the Prime Minister's Office from April 2024, stating: 'We are waiting for the right time. Now everything is in place, which is why we are submitting the documents and starting to collect endorsements'.
This constitutional proposal was submitted on December 5, 2024, and announced formally in the Swiss Federal Gazette on December 31. Supporters state that this bill aims to establish a financially sound, sovereign, and responsible Switzerland.
The development of Bitcoin in Switzerland
Bitcoin usage in Lugano, Switzerland has grown significantly. Not only is there an annual "Plan ₿" Bitcoin conference, but around 260 stores accept Bitcoin transactions. This is where supporters of the country's Bitcoin reserve bill gain confidence. However, according to reports, the current chairman of the Swiss National Bank, Martin Schlegel, remains cautious about cryptocurrencies.
Currently, due to Trump's support for cryptocurrency, the importance of Bitcoin is being emphasized, and countries are starting to consider whether to include cryptocurrency in their national currency reserves. It can be said that it is a new global phenomenon in 2024.
