Former French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen has passed away
On January 7, according to a statement quoted by Agence France-Presse, Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the French far-right party "Front National", died at the age of 96. Le Pen has been running for president of France several times since 1974. In 2002, Le Pen shocked French politics by defeating Lionel Jospin, then Prime Minister of France and a leftist Socialist Party, in the first round of the presidential election. In 2011, his daughter, Marine Le Pen, succeeded him as party leader, and since then she has run for president three times and built the party (now known as the National Alliance) into one of France's main political forces.
