CBOE Seeks to Extend Options Trading Hours, Paving the Way for 24-Hour Trading Era
Jin10 data reported on October 21 that the operator of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), Cboe Global Markets, is seeking to extend options trading hours, pushing the U.S. market further towards “overnight trading.” According to documents, the company has proposed to add trading hours outside of the regular trading session (9:30 AM to 4:00 PM New York time). If approved, CBOE will introduce an early session from 7:30 AM to 9:25 AM, as well as an after-hours session from 4:00 PM to 4:15 PM. U.S. stock exchange operators are attempting to extend trading hours to match overseas demand, and CBOE is one of the first derivatives exchanges to propose such adjustments, indicating that the options market is expanding trading hours in sync with the stock market. The documents show that CBOE plans to extend trading hours only for certain categories of stock options, depending on volume, market capitalization, and trading activity. This expansion will be limited to specific contracts and will be tested in a small-scale pilot before and after regular trading hours.
