Republican Senator Tillis: "The Republican Party is about to make a mistake"
Gate News bot message, according to CNN, North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis spoke in the Senate on Sunday, after he announced earlier that day that he would not seek re-election.
Tillis stated that the comprehensive agenda bill of the Trump administration would harm the interests of those eligible for Medicaid, which is a federal program providing health insurance for low-income Americans.
“Now, the Republican Party is about to make a mistake on healthcare, going back on its promises. This bill in its current form will inevitably violate the commitment made by Donald Trump in the Oval Office… At that time he said, we can hold accountable for waste, fraud, and abuse in any item,” Tillis said.
He added that he agreed with the other reforms listed in the bill. However, he hoped that the Senate would take the time to consider the impact of these reforms on the Medicaid program before making a final decision.
He said, “We have a responsibility to the American people, and I also have a responsibility to the people of North Carolina. I will not vote in favor until we have sufficient reason to believe that we are fully prepared.”
Background: Trump has repeatedly vowed not to use Medicaid, while Republican lawmakers insist that their proposal will primarily affect adults who are employable—and who they believe—should be employed. However, experts say the actual impact may affect a broader range of Americans, including some of the most vulnerable groups that Republicans have repeatedly pledged to protect. These include children, people with disabilities, and the elderly.
