Donald Trump Continues Customs Duty Explanations! He Gave China Until April 9, Will Increase Gradually!
U.S. President Donald Trump issued a new ultimatum to China, threatening to impose a 50% additional tariff if Beijing does not pull back its recent retaliatory tariffs.
Trump warned in a statement from his Truth Social account that if China continues its 34% tariff increase on US goods, the US will implement new tariffs starting April 9. The proposed tariff increase has the potential to raise the total tariff rate to 104%, in addition to the existing 20% tariff and the 34% reciprocal tariff announced by Trump last week.
Trump said, "Yesterday, China announced a 34% retaliatory tariff in addition to the already record-high customs duties, non-monetary barriers, illegal subsidies for companies, and long-term significant currency manipulation." He added, "If China does not pull back the 34% increase it made in addition to the long-standing trade violations by tomorrow, April 8, the U.S. will impose an additional 50% customs duty on China starting April 9."
In addition to the customs duty threat, Trump indicated that diplomatic dialogue has been severed by announcing that all discussions regarding the meetings requested with China would be terminated. He added, "Meetings will also be initiated immediately with other countries that have requested discussions."
A senior White House official confirmed that the proposed 50% customs duty would be in addition to the 34% "reciprocal" customs duty announced last week and the long-standing 20% tax. The official noted that, if fully implemented, the cumulative tariffs would represent one of the harshest trade penalties ever imposed by the U.S.
