What Is Staking

In the cryptocurrency world, staking is when you lock your digital assets within a blockchain network to help run and secure the network, which allows you to earn rewards. Essentially, staking lets you “lend” your tokens to the network—they’re used to validate transactions or maintain security, while you earn a return. Staking typically applies to blockchains that use Proof of Stake (PoS) or similar mechanisms, such as Ethereum 2.0, Cardano, and Polkadot. Unlike traditional mining, staking doesn’t require expensive mining rigs or high electricity costs, making staking more accessible, especially to beginners.

How Staking Works

At its core, staking relies on the Proof of Stake mechanism. In PoS networks, validators are chosen not for their computing power, but based on the amount of tokens staked and the length of time they remain locked.

When you stake tokens on the network:

  • Your tokens are locked in a wallet on the network and cannot be withdrawn freely.
  • The network selects validators according to set rules to produce new blocks.
  • As a validator or delegator, you receive a proportional share of block rewards or transaction fees.
  • If you participate in malicious activity, a portion of your tokens may be slashed (forfeited).

Main Staking Methods

  • Self-Staking: You run your own node to validate transactions, which requires both a minimum token amount and technical expertise.
  • Delegated Staking: You delegate your tokens to an existing node, which stakes on your behalf, and you share in the rewards.
  • Exchange Staking: You participate in staking directly on an exchange. This is user-friendly and ideal for beginners, though returns may be slightly lower.

Gate offers a streamlined way for beginners to start staking—Gate Earn (On-Chain Earn). On the Gate platform, you can choose from a variety of staking products, including fixed-term and flexible-term options, supporting multiple major cryptocurrencies like ETH, BTC, USDT, and more.

Key Features:

  • Flexible staking. Redeem at any time, ideal for short-term holders.
  • Fixed-term staking. Lock up assets for a set period to earn higher annualized returns.
  • Low entry barrier. No need to set up your own node; you can stake directly using the Gate wallet.
  • Security: Gate provides custody and risk control services for users.

With Gate On-Chain Earn, users can earn staking rewards from PoS networks and benefit from additional platform interest or promotional bonuses. This makes it easy for beginners to start staking.

Staking Rewards and Risks

Rewards: The staking yield is usually presented as annual percentage yield (APY) and can range from 3% to 20% depending on the token and product. If you stake high-quality tokens for the long term, you can generate reliable passive income.

Risks:

  • Lockup risk: Some products have lockup periods during which you can’t withdraw, and price volatility may affect your returns.
  • Validator risk: Delegating to unreliable nodes may decrease your rewards or result in penalties.
  • Platform risk: Security issues with exchanges or staking platforms may cause asset loss.

How to Get Started with Staking

  • Select the token and network you want to stake, such as ETH, BTC, or USDT.
  • Decide on your staking method: self-staking, delegated staking, or Gate On-Chain Earn.
  • Stake your tokens using either the Gate wallet or an official wallet.
  • Regularly review your rewards and lockup terms.
  • Stay informed about associated risks.

You can enter the crypto space in a stable way by staking. Using Gate On-Chain Earn, you can participate safely and efficiently in network growth while earning rewards. Newcomers should balance potential returns with risks and gradually increase involvement as they become more familiar with staking options.
