You've probably heard about Bitcoin Pizza Day, but the actual story behind the most expensive pizza purchase in history is even more interesting than the meme suggests.
Back in May 2010, Bitcoin was basically worthless in everyone's eyes. We're talking $0.003 per coin. Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer in Florida, was one of the few people who actually believed in the technology early on. Most people dismissed it as just another technical experiment with zero practical value.
Then Laszlo did something that would echo through crypto history. He posted on BitcoinTalk asking if anyone would sell him two large pizzas for 10,000 BTC. The post was straightforward: "I'll pay 10,000 Bitcoin for two large pizzas. If you're interested, let me know." Two days later, someone took him up on it and ordered from Papa John's. That transaction became the first documented real-world purchase using Bitcoin.
Here's where it gets wild. At the time, those 10,000 bitcoins were worth about $30. No one thought twice about it. But then Bitcoin actually started doing what the believers said it would do. By 2017, that same pizza purchase would have cost $200 million. Fast forward to today in 2026, and we're looking at over $400 million worth of Bitcoin spent on what was essentially a couple of pizzas. It's probably the most expensive pizza ever bought, and it's not even close.
What's remarkable is that Laszlo doesn't regret it. In interviews, he's said something like: "I had no idea Bitcoin would get here. The fact that I could actually use cryptocurrency to buy something real was incredible at the time." That mindset tells you everything about the early believers.
The broader lesson here is wild when you think about it. Bitcoin started as this abstract concept, and Laszlo's pizza transaction was one of the first moments where it became real. Every year on May 22nd, the crypto community remembers this moment. It's not just about the pizza. It's about the moment when crypto went from theory to practice.
If you're looking at crypto markets now, BTC is hovering around $68.3K, ETH at $2.11K, and XRP at $1.34. The volatility is still there, but so is the adoption. Bitcoin has come a long way from $0.003.
Obviously, crypto is still high-risk and extremely volatile. This is just history and market observation, not investment advice. Do your own research before making any moves.
