Recently, more and more traders are talking about how to combine MSS and CHOCH in their strategies, and honestly, it’s changing the game in cryptocurrency trading.

It started for me with the observation that most traders only look at prices but don’t understand what’s really happening with the market structure. Market Structure Shift, or MSS, is the moment when the market transitions from one phase to another. This could be a shift from an uptrend to a downtrend or vice versa. When you see the market, which previously formed higher highs and higher lows, suddenly break below a key level—that’s your signal.

But here’s where it gets interesting. MSS alone isn’t everything. You need confirmation, and that’s where CHOCH—Change of Character—comes in. It’s the observation of a change in price behavior. I notice this on charts as a sudden shift in momentum, volume spike, or a change in candlestick patterns. In a downtrend, if you suddenly see a series of green candles instead of red ones, it could be a sign that something is changing.

In practice, I do it like this: first, I identify key levels where the price previously paused. Then I wait for a breakout of that level—that’s a potential MSS. But I don’t enter immediately. I wait for confirmation of CHOCH, meaning a change in market behavior. This could be a volume surge, a momentum shift on RSI or MACD. Only when I see both signals together do I feel more confident.

Trading with CHOCH requires patience, especially on higher timeframes. On 4H or daily charts, it’s more visible than on minute charts. But even on shorter timeframes, you can find good setups if you know what to look for.

One thing I’ve learned the hard way is to always set your stop loss near these key levels. If the change turns out to be a false signal, at least you know where to exit. And combine this with other tools—support, resistance, candlestick patterns. It’s not just about MSS or CHOCH; it’s about the whole picture.

In recent days, I’ve been observing some interesting setups on Gate, where clear MSS with confirmation of CHOCH are visible. If you’re interested in this kind of analysis, it’s worth reviewing the charts there and seeing how it looks in practice.
