Wing plans to expand its delivery service to 150 new locations at Walmart.

Alphabet’s Wing company continues to develop its relationship with Walmart. The collaboration between the two brands began in 2023, and now the demand for drone delivery of groceries, pharmaceuticals, and other goods has increased significantly. According to the new expansion plan, Wing aims to launch drone operations from major cities like Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta to an additional 150 Walmart locations.

Transforming the Drone Delivery Partnership

The initial phase of the partnership started in early 2023 as a pilot project in two stores in Dallas. The trial was very successful, serving approximately 60,000 deliveries, demonstrating that the business model is adaptable. In the next phase, the service expanded to 18 Walmart Supercenters across the Dallas-Fort Worth area and is now also covering locations in Atlanta.

Heather Rivera, Wing’s new Chief Business Officer, told TechCrunch that every step of the drone delivery technology development has been carefully planned. Notably, the most active customers use the service up to three times a week. The most popular items delivered include eggs, fresh vegetables (tomatoes, avocados), lunch boxes, and soft snacks.

New Expansion Plans and Operational Growth

In summer 2025, Wing and Walmart announced plans to jointly expand their services to new cities—Houston, Orlando, Tampa, and Charlotte. Rivera confirmed that drone deliveries in Houston will begin on January 15, and this process is expected to continue through the end of 2027. The expansion will be gradual, with the company applying operational tactics tailored to each region’s characteristics.

The key to successful expansion lies in opening multiple stores simultaneously. This approach was tested with six locations in Atlanta, yielding positive results. Rivera emphasized that this strategy could be applied to new markets as well.

Upgraded Drone Technology

Along with broader coverage, Wing continues to upgrade its technology. Recently, the company conducted its first commercial flights with a new, larger drone capable of carrying up to five pounds. This upgrade helps increase both the speed and range of deliveries.

Following the expansion, Wing will operate through over 270 Walmart stores, covering cities like Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami. This indicates that approximately 10% of the U.S. population could potentially access Wing’s drone services.

Future Business Phases

Currently, Wing works with other platforms like DoorDash, but its primary commercial focus remains the partnership with Walmart. The company’s strategy is to integrate services directly into Walmart’s existing operations and expand its presence across various market segments. Rivera expressed deep responsibility and enthusiasm for managing these phases. Overall, drone delivery services are considered a crucial part of Walmart’s strategic growth plan.
