Average mortgage calculations assumed a 10% down payment using the national 30-year fixed mortgage rate from the Federal Reserve Economic Data. Utility expense calculations encompassed electricity, natural or utility gas, fuel oil, bottled or tank gas, wood fuel, piped water, sewage, and garbage collection services as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey.
