Back in 2017, I made my first serious move into crypto—dropped money on 3 BTC when the market was still relatively quiet. Held on through the chaos, even managed to swing some of those holdings into XRP based on some signals I'd picked up. But here's the kicker: one of the exchanges I was using got hacked, and I lost a chunk of my stack. BTC, XRP, gone. It was brutal at first, but looking back, that loss taught me more about risk management than any tutorial ever could. Sometimes your first real win in this space comes from learning what not to do.

Exchange hacks are really rare, but to be fair, self-custody is the right way to go. Does anyone still keep their coins on exchanges?

ngl The exchange getting hacked was truly an eye-opener; paying for a lesson is more effective than watching ten tutorials.

The near-death experience in 2017 was actually a harsh lesson taught by the market. Exchanges were hacked, coins were lost, and only then did I understand what "self-custody equals survival" means. Some lessons can only be truly understood by paying with real money.

nah see, this is exactly the dark forest at work—exchange gets compromised, your coins vanish into the void, and suddenly you're the one learning the hard way about custodial risk. that's not a lesson, that's a tax on being naive about where you store your ammunition. should've been self-custodying from day one, not playing roulette with some exchange's security theater.

When an exchange gets hacked, the consequences are really outrageous. I've experienced it once myself, and since then I never dared to keep my coins on an exchange again.
