Web3 storage has always been plagued by an old problem—difficulty in balancing security and efficiency. Filecoin's retrieval speed has been less than ideal, Arweave has inherent disadvantages in handling dynamic data, and traditional storage solutions can't keep up with the pace of large-scale multimedia applications in Web3. It wasn't until the emergence of the Walrus protocol that a new possibility was opened up for the industry.



So what exactly does Walrus do? In simple terms, it is the native decentralized storage protocol of the Sui ecosystem, and its core logic is to abandon the inefficient "multiple copies stacking" approach. Instead, it adopts erasure coding technology—meaning even if two-thirds of the nodes fail, the remaining nodes can still recover the data, while keeping read latency in the millisecond range.

The most impressive feature of Walrus is its RedStuff 2D coding technology. This system replaces complex polynomial calculations with simple XOR operations, reducing the recovery cost per node to O(B/n), and the overall network recovery cost to as low as O(B), essentially making it free. Coupled with a replication factor of only 4 to 5 times, it ensures decentralized fault tolerance while keeping storage costs comparable to centralized cloud services. This is a highly advanced solution in the current landscape.
