Wintermute Signals No Vote as Aave Governance Rift Deepens

Source: CryptoTale Original Title: Wintermute Signals No Vote as Aave Governance Rift Deepens Original Link: https://cryptotale.org/wintermute-signals-no-vote-as-aave-governance-rift-deepens/ Wintermute founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy announced the firm will vote against an AAVE governance proposal seeking to transfer brand asset control to token holders, citing unresolved value capture issues. Gaevoy disclosed Wintermute’s long-standing exposure to the AAVE token, noting the firm invested in AAVE in 2022 and holds a meaningful position while participating in governance.

He confirmed Wintermute has no equity exposure to Aave Labs. According to Gaevoy, the vote reflects deeper disagreements between Aave Labs and token holders over who should benefit from the protocol’s operations. He warned that unresolved misalignment could slow token growth as the debate intensifies ahead of Aave Network’s expected launch.

Disclosure and Value Capture Tensions

Gaevoy outlined that both he and Wintermute hold AAVE tokens, with neither party owning equity in Aave Labs. This distinction frames the current disagreement over value capture expectations.

He stated that a clear mismatch exists between Aave Labs and a large share of AAVE token holders regarding who should capture economic value generated by the protocol. Similar mismatches exist around external functions, especially business development roles. Gaevoy cautioned that without resolution, governance actions might become mere displays rather than genuine efforts.

Governance Vote and Political Friction

The debate centers on an AAVE ARFC proposal to transfer brand asset control to token holders. Gaevoy criticized the proposal for lacking operational clarity and omitting governance details for the owning entity. He questioned whether the entity would operate for profit and how it would manage the frontend and brand.

Gaevoy acknowledged communication flaws from Aave founder Stani Kulechov but stated the backlash went too far. He argued that public escalation harmed the token’s price during an already sensitive governance process. He described the vote as a temperature check rather than a final decision, suggesting success or failure matters less than the signal it sends to stakeholders.

Wintermute’s No Vote and Market Implications

Gaevoy confirmed Wintermute will vote against the proposal based on outlined concerns, while still expecting Aave Labs to engage seriously with long-term token value capture. According to him, solving this issue could set a precedent for other DeFi tokens.

The standoff has divided the Aave community. Some view Gaevoy as an activist investor protecting token holder rights, while others argue Wintermute’s position maintains slow decentralization with institutional power remaining intact.

With voting nearing its final stage, both proponents and opponents face mounting pressure. Rejection of the proposal might lead Aave Labs into a more complex roadmap, while approval could further widen differences between liquidity providers and core developers heading into 2026.

Wintermute's move is a bit outrageous. Just abstain if you want, but do you have to make a public announcement...

Wintermute's outright waiver this time is really bold. It seems the internal conflict within Aave is becoming more and more outrageous.

The split in Aave is becoming more and more obvious, even Wintermute is no longer investing, which is outrageous.

Wintermute abstains? This is about to cause trouble. Aave internally is probably going to split apart.
