Interesting contrast in how platforms handle EU scrutiny. X just got slapped with a €140M fine for content rule violations, while TikTok managed to reach a settlement. Shows the different strategies companies take when facing regulatory heat—some fight it out, others negotiate early. Either way, content moderation policies are getting expensive for big tech. Makes you wonder how decentralized platforms might fare under similar pressure.

The EU's fines are really crafty; X got hit with a 140M penalty, but at least the lesson wasn't learned in vain.

X is really out of line this time. The €140 fine is minor; the real issue is that those EU officials have started targeting our content moderation—basically saying our rules are too lax. TikTok was smart, negotiating terms early to avoid getting ganged up on. It's really tough for the big platforms now: they have to please users while also catering to regulators. Sooner or later, these costs are going to be passed on to us, the regular users. If we really move to decentralized platforms, regulators might not even be able to find anyone to penalize... On the other hand, this might be the last time we ever get a chance to "foot the bill."

The EU really knows how to play this game—X refuses to admit fault and gets fined until they cry, while TikTok is smart enough to bow its head early... In the end, it's all about who backs down first.

Having money makes things easier; TikTok's ability to smooth things over is indeed much more sophisticated than X's.

When it comes to EU fines, it’s all about who stands their ground. X directly resisted the $140M fine, while TikTok conceded early on—the contrast is huge.
