Crypto search of the century: where is the "Crypto queen" Ruja Ignatova now?

Abstract generation in progress

One of the most wanted persons in the crypto world has gone missing into thin air. Ruja Ignatova, the founder of the massive Ponzi scheme OneCoin, has remained elusive since 2017 when she was last seen in Greece.

Shocking Numbers

  • 4+ billion dollars stolen
  • 3.5 million people deceived
  • FBI Reward: up to $5 million for information on location
  • Last known locality: Greece (2017)

New versions: alive or dead?

Version 1: Hides in Africa

Recent investigations suggest that she may have hidden in the affluent suburb of Constantia, Cape Town — South Africa. Interestingly, her brother Konstantin Ignatov had been staying there for some time before his arrest in 2019.

Version 2: Already Dead

Bulgarian media suggest a more tragic scenario — she could have been killed in 2018 on the orders of the local drug lord Christofor Amatidis (nicknamed “Taki”). According to some reports, the killer even dismembered the body and threw the remains into the Ionian Sea.

What happened with OneCoin?

A large-scale scam operated from 2014 to 2017 — posing as a revolutionary cryptocurrency, akin to Bitcoin, with promises of wealth. In reality, it was a classic multi-level marketing scheme on steroids, featuring lavish parties and attracting new victims.

Kinematic consequences: Hollywood has filmed “Fake!” starring Kate Winslet, who plays a real victim that lost about 300 thousand dollars.

Brother is already in the system

Kostyantyn Ihnatov pleaded guilty in 2019, was released from prison in 2024 after cooperating with American prosecutors and the seizure of $118,000. He called OneCoin “the biggest mistake of his life,” but did not reveal anything about his sister's whereabouts.

So, the question remains open: is Ruza sailing on a yacht somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea, or has he long been lying on the seabed? The FBI is willing to pay millions for an answer.
