WordPress 7.0 to be released on April 9, introducing MCP adapter support for native AI Agent integration

Gate News reports that on March 25, WordPress 7.0 is scheduled for release on April 9. One of the core changes is integrating the MCP (Model Context Protocol) adapter into the core, allowing any WordPress site to serve as an MCP server, enabling AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT to discover features, understand structures, and perform actions directly within the site.

Version 7.0 introduces three components at the AI infrastructure level: AI Connectors, which centrally manage API keys for AI services in the settings panel, initially supporting Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, with all plugins sharing the same credentials; Abilities API, introduced in 6.9 and expanded in 7.0, a capability registration interface that allows plugins to declare their functions in a format understandable by AI (such as fetching articles, updating pages, running site health checks), standardizing input and output; and MCP Adapter, which exposes all registered abilities via the MCP protocol to external AI agents, enabling agents to automatically discover site capabilities and invoke them with user authorization.

WordPress.com launched MCP write permissions early on March 20, covering 19 write operations across six content types, including editing content, managing comments, creating pages, uploading media, and adjusting categories and tags. All actions require explicit user confirmation before execution. New content defaults to draft status, and deleted content moves to the trash, retained for 30 days. WordPress.com also defaults to enabling OAuth 2.1 authentication, with AI clients using only time-limited tokens and not accessing user credentials.

WordPress powers approximately 43% of websites worldwide. Supporting MCP integration into the core means these sites will have standardized access for AI agents.
