Gate News reports that on March 21, a vessel falsely claiming to be a decommissioned natural gas tanker departed the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. This is the first incident since the outbreak of Middle East conflict involving such a method to pass through the waterway. Ship tracking data shows that the vessel identified as the liquefied natural gas carrier “Jamal” left the strait on Friday morning. However, according to market participants and port agents, the real “Jamal” was stranded at a shipbreaking yard in India last October and is currently being dismantled there. The vessel claiming to be “Jamal” is a “zombie ship,” meaning it is impersonating a legally decommissioned vessel. This incident indicates that, as the Middle East conflict continues, shipping strategies through the Strait of Hormuz are constantly evolving.
