There was a time when the Nigerian government paid close attention to how people used social media, even feared its impact. Now, it often feels like that same space has become a tool to keep people distracted and quiet.
Petrol prices have jumped from ₦800 to ₦1300, and many are beginning to treat it as normal simply because they can still manage to afford it.
Back in the early 2000s, before social media became this dominant,
would any government have had the confidence to increase fuel prices by even ₦50 without massive public reaction?
