I just noticed that Tether is pushing forward with an interesting infrastructure development. They announced a strategic investment in the t-0 network, which is primarily designed for cross-border payment settlements.
In simple terms, the core of t-0 is to use USD₮ (Tether's USD stablecoin) as the settlement layer, enabling banks and financial institutions worldwide to complete international transfers faster and cheaper. Everyone is aware of the issues with traditional cross-border payments—slow, expensive, and complex, involving multiple intermediaries and exchange rate risks. t-0 aims to address these pain points.
Interestingly, the design philosophy of this network is to allow each participating institution to transact in their local currency, while the underlying settlement and clearing are done using USD₮. The advantage of this approach is that it maintains fiat currency compliance while leveraging the efficiency of stablecoins. Plus, the entire process is conducted on-chain, offering higher transparency and security.
From Tether’s perspective, this investment reflects their ambition to upgrade stablecoins from mere trading tools to foundational financial infrastructure. USD₮ already has significant global liquidity, and now, through an institutional-grade network like t-0, it has the opportunity to truly penetrate the traditional financial system.
If this model can be successfully implemented, it could have a major impact on the entire cross-border payment ecosystem. Especially for financial institutions looking to reduce capital lock-up and improve settlement efficiency, the combination of t-0 and USD₮ is indeed attractive. It’s worth keeping an eye on the project's progress.
