Just found out there are actual apps that can tell you if your spare change is worth serious money. Like, you know those coins sitting in jars that might be rare? Turns out identifying them used to take forever, but now AI can do it in seconds.
I looked into three of these rare coin apps and honestly they're pretty wild. CoinSnap is straightforward - you just snap a photo of both sides of your coin and it tells you the value, where it's from, and if it's even rare. The app tracks everything and gives you collection totals. There's also Coinoscope which works similarly but shows you a list of matching coins so you can compare. That one's free and lets you connect with other collectors to buy or sell.
Then there's PCGS CoinFacts which is more like a massive library. Over 40,000 US coins in their database with auction prices, photos, and all the details. You can scan coins or use photos and it pulls up everything - rarity estimates, condition info, expert notes on specific coins. It's basically the encyclopedia version if you're serious about rare coin hunting.
The crazy part is how fast these rare coin identification apps work now. What used to require hours of research or talking to collectors you can literally do in your pocket. Makes me wonder how many people have valuable coins just chilling at home and have no idea. Might be worth checking your collection if you have one.
