Stammer and Trump clash remotely over "letting America withdraw from NATO"
In response to U.S. President Trump’s complaints that NATO allies refused to help combat Iran and then threatened to “consider withdrawing the United States from NATO,” British Prime Minister Stamer responded on April 1 that the UK will adhere to its national interests in Iran and will not be drawn into conflict.
The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph published an interview with Trump on April 1, stating that after NATO allies refused to help fight Iran, Trump is “seriously considering” withdrawing the U.S. from NATO.
When asked whether he would consider pulling the U.S. out of NATO, Trump replied, “Oh, yes, I think that’s no longer something to consider. I’ve never been influenced by NATO. I’ve always known they are paper tigers, by the way, (Russian President) Putin also knows this.”
The report states that Trump is dissatisfied with NATO allies’ lack of participation in fighting Iran and their unwillingness to guarantee navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “incredible.”
Trump also accused British Prime Minister Stamer of refusing to join the U.S. and Israel in military action against Iran, saying, “You don’t even have (decent) navy, your (equipment) is too old, and aircraft carriers are not effective.”
In response to Trump’s remarks, Stamer said on April 1, “No matter how much pressure I and others are under, no matter how much noise from outside, the decisions I make will prioritize Britain’s national interests. That’s why I’ve made it clear that this is not our war, and we will not be drawn into it.”
Stamer stated that the UK will not choose between the U.S. and Europe.
The world is in turmoil, and long-term national interests require Britain to build closer partnerships with European allies on defense and security, energy, emissions, and economic issues.
Recently, several European countries have expressed their unwillingness to be involved in the U.S.-Israel military actions against Iran. ( Xinhua News Agency )
