On March 31, the UK Foreign Office issued a joint statement signed by foreign ministers from ten countries including the UK, France, and others, as well as senior representatives of the European Union, strongly condemning recent attacks against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), urging all parties to abide by international law and ensure the safety of UNIFIL personnel and installations.
The joint statement, issued by foreign ministers from Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, and the UK, along with senior EU representatives, expressed firm support for UNIFIL’s mission in southern Lebanon, called for maintaining channels for conflict de-escalation, and strongly condemned recent attacks on UNIFIL.
The statement emphasized that these attacks have caused heavy casualties among peacekeeping personnel, which is unacceptable.
It pointed out that, in accordance with international humanitarian law, the safety of Lebanese civilians, humanitarian workers, peacekeepers, and civilian infrastructure such as airports, ports, and bridges must be protected, and Lebanon’s territorial integrity must be respected.
The statement also called on Israel to avoid further escalation of the conflict and to refrain from conducting ground military operations on Lebanese territory.
Recently, UNIFIL’s security has been repeatedly affected by exchanges of fire, with two attacks resulting in the death of three peacekeepers and injuries to multiple others. ( Xinhua News Agency )
