Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA grant banking details, especially with the December payments coming up. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID, a recent bank statement (less than 3 months old), and fill out their Payment Method Change Form. They'll verify everything on the spot and send it to the bank—usually takes about 3 weeks to process. Pro tip: submit this before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
Now if you're on the SRD R350 grant, it's way simpler—everything's online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they SMS you a secure link, you click it and upload your new banking details there. Takes a few days to a week to verify. Just make sure the account is actually in your name, not a joint account or someone else's, or SASSA won't touch it.
For updating your phone number, permanent grant holders should call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office in person. SRD users can do it on the portal—enter your ID, get an OTP sent to your new number, verify and done. One thing though: watch out for fake websites claiming to help with this. Always use the official SASSA portal to protect your info.
The whole thing is annoying but necessary if your bank details have changed. Don't sleep on it or you'll miss payments.
