Recently, the preseason tests in Bahrain have concluded, and honestly, what's happening with Checo in Cadillac is quite interesting. After two testing sessions in February, the Mexican driver is finally ready for his debut in the team's new car.
Looking at the numbers from the last day of testing, Checo finished in tenth place with a 1:40.842, so clearly there is a gap compared to frontrunners like Leclerc in Ferrari. But here’s the important part: the Mexican is calm about it. When he spoke to the press, he made it clear that he knew perfectly well that this would be a tough start. It’s his first year with Cadillac in F1, so the team is still in constant development.
What caught my attention the most was how Checo explained the strategy. The guy was very frank: they know they have a balanced car, they’ve done a lot of miles in testing, and now the crucial thing is how quickly they can develop from here. It’s not about being ahead today; it’s about closing the gap during the season. The massive challenge Checo and the team face is developing faster than McLaren and Red Bull, which have dominated recently.
Of course, in the paddock, the readings were mixed. Ferrari showed strength with Leclerc setting the best time, Lando Norris finished strong with McLaren, and Max Verstappen keeps Red Bull in the fight. Mercedes slowed down a bit, while Williams and Aston Martin focused more on data than on the stopwatch.
The reality is that Checo is entering a building mission. Cadillac needs to establish solid foundations in the first half of the season to develop the car as quickly as possible. The Mexican is already ready for Australia, so soon we’ll see how all this translates into racing. It’s going to be an intense year to see if Checo and the team can close the gap.
