Just dealt with updating my R350 banking details on the SRD portal and honestly, it's way smoother than I expected. If you're still using an old account for your grant, here's what actually happens when you try to change it.
So the whole banking details change thing is basically online now for SRD grants—you go to the SASSA SRD website, punch in your ID number, and they send you a link via SMS. Click the link, enter your new bank details, done. The tricky part? It takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify everything. And yeah, the account has to be in your name only—no joint accounts or anything sketchy. I learned that the hard way when I almost tried using my mom's account lol.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), it's different though—you actually have to go to a SASSA office in person. Can't do it online, which is annoying but whatever. You need your ID, a recent bank statement, and you fill out their form. They send it to the bank and it takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: do it before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that payment cycle.
For changing your phone number on the SRD, same thing—use their contact portal, enter your ID and application number, put in the new number, they send you an OTP to verify. But heads up, there's apparently a bunch of fake websites out there trying to scam people into giving up their grant info. Just stick to the official SASSA link and you're good.
Honestly, if the online stuff gives you trouble, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit your local office. Waiting times suck but at least you know it's legit. Anyone else had issues with this process?
