I just checked how much the fine is for using a cell phone in Mexico City, and I couldn't believe it. It turns out that since February, the sanctions have increased based on the UMA, and now if you're caught with your phone in hand, you can be fined up to 4,105 pesos in the capital. Seriously, almost 4,000 pesos just for looking at your phone at a traffic light.

What surprised me the most is the difference between states. In Jalisco, the fine for using a cell phone in Mexico City is much more expensive than there, where the maximum is 2,932 pesos. Apparently, Mexico City assigns more UMAs for the same infraction, so residents pay almost double. Fairly unfair considering it's the same act.

The good thing is that in the capital there's a discount if you pay quickly. If you settle the debt within the first 10 business days after notification, they automatically reduce it by 50%. Basically, if you're fined for using a cell phone in Mexico City and act fast, you could pay around 1,759 pesos instead of the minimum 3,519. Still a lot of money.

And the craziest part is that they can fine you anywhere, even if you're stuck in a traffic jam or waiting at a red light. You don't even need to be driving, just being behind the wheel is enough. So it's better to keep your phone stored away when you get in the car—it's not worth the risk. Have any of you experienced something like this?
