So you need to change your banking details on SASSA SRD or your permanent grant? Yeah, the process is different depending on which one you're on, so let me break it down because it's actually pretty important to get this right.
If you're getting the SRD R370 grant, the good news is it's mostly online. You just go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your SA ID number, and they'll send you a secure SMS link. Click that link, enter your new bank details, and you're done. Just make sure the account is in your name - they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify, but then your next payment goes to the new account. The tricky part is if you're also changing your phone number - you'll need to use their contact details page and verify with an OTP they send you. Don't use sketchy third-party sites for this; stick to the official portal.
Now, if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), it's a bit more involved. You actually have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person - you can't do it online. Bring your original SA ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account (a recent bank statement or official letter from the bank, nothing older than three months). Fill out the Payment Method Change Form there, and they'll send it to the bank for verification. That can take up to 21 working days. Here's the thing though - if you want the change to kick in next month, you need to submit it before the 15th of the current month. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another cycle.
For changing your phone number on a permanent grant, you can try calling the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 first, but sometimes they'll still ask you to come in person depending on what needs updating. Honestly, if you're already going to the office to change your banking details on SASSA, just do the phone number change at the same time.
The main thing to remember: don't use unofficial websites, always use the official SASSA portal or go to an actual SASSA office. And yeah, make sure whatever account you're putting your grant into is actually in your name. That's non-negotiable for both SRD and permanent grants.
