🛰️ Hong Kong’s “compliant stablecoin” rollout: How should we view this master plan?
【Trader perspective: Say goodbye to the “wild frontier” era— the liquidity revolution has begun】
This time, the license was not granted to the crypto-native projects we’re familiar with. Instead, it was Anchorpoint, led by HSBC and Standard Chartered. This shows that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has a very clear line of thinking: stablecoins must be as stable as banks.
1. Why should we care about these two licenses?
“Professional players” enter the market— a dimensional-reduction attack on the funding threshold: Previously, when big money wanted to get in, they had to go through all kinds of hassle for withdrawals and deposits, worrying about accounts being frozen. Now, with HSBC and Standard Chartered stepping in directly, in the future you may simply open your mobile banking app and be able to buy Hong Kong dollar stablecoins directly (for example, the Hong Kong dollar stablecoin that HSBC plans to launch in the second half of the year). This means that an enormous amount of off-exchange traditional capital now has a “compliance gateway.”
From “cryptocurrency” to “digital fiat”: Previously, when we traded, we used USDT—it depended on Tether’s face. Now that there are bank-backed stablecoins, this is called “stable assets supported by fiat.” This will greatly strengthen institutional investors’ confidence, and for mainstream assets like $BTC and $ETH , it’s a top long-term positive.
2. What direct impact does this have on retail investors?
RWA (real-world asset tokenization) is about to take off: Stablecoins are the cornerstone of all RWAs. With the licenses in place, real estate, bonds, and gold can be bought and sold on-chain, and settlement will be fast enough to fly.
USDT is under pressure: This move in Hong Kong is, in effect, fighting for turf against the current stablecoin powerhouses. For us, it adds another safer harbor. If the market experiences violent volatility (like $RAVE these past two days), switching to bank-issued stablecoins really makes it easier to sleep at night. $BTC $ETH $SOL
