Just had to sort out my SASSA banking details and realized most people don't know how different the process is depending on which grant you're getting. If you're on a permanent grant like disability or old age, you literally have to go to the SASSA office in person. No shortcuts. You'll need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works), and they'll fill out the Payment Method Change Form right there. Takes up to 21 working days for the banks to verify everything, so submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in next month.
Now if you're on the SRD grant, it's completely different and way easier honestly. You can change bank details for SRD online through their portal without leaving home. Just enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, click it, and add your new bank account details. Still takes a few days to verify but at least you're not waiting in an office.
For your cellphone number, permanent grant holders need to call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit in person. But SRD beneficiaries can update their contact info online too—you'll get an OTP sent to your new number to verify the change. One thing though: make sure whatever account you're using is actually in your name. SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything dodgy like that. And heads up, there are fake websites out there claiming to help with this stuff, so always use the official SASSA portal. Not worth risking your grant over that.
