I just watched the video Zelensky shared this week, and honestly, it’s quite impactful. The Ukrainian president opened the doors of the Búnker presidencial beneath Kiev— the place that has become a symbol of resistance during these years of war. While walking through the tunnels, he recalled how it was from that underground complex where he organized Ukraine’s entire response to the invasión rusa that began on February 24, 2022.
What caught my attention the most was when Zelensky entered that small room on calle Bankova, the famous bunker office where he had his first conversations with world leaders. That’s where he spoke with Biden and heard that proposal to evacuate the country. His response was legendary: he needed ammunition, not for them to take him out of Ucrania. It’s the kind of moment that defines a leader.
While walking through that labyrinth of tunnels with low, curved ceilings, I noticed something interesting. Zelensky, who is about 170 centimeters tall, had to duck in several passages, surrounded by exposed cables and control boxes. The walls were filled with posters in blue and yellow—the colors of the bandera ucraniana—along with messages of support for the soldiers. It’s almost like an underground monument to resistance.
The bunker itself is an old Soviet anti-aircraft shelter, designed as an emergency government complex. Inside, there are small rooms for different branches of government: the presidency, the cabinet, the parliament. Each with its own chairs, screens, and flags. According to Zelensky, it was from here that his team coordinated daily with the ejército, looking for solutions, delivering weapons to blocked cities, and organizing medicines and food.
The 19-minute video he recorded to commemorate the cuarto aniversario de la guerra has a clear purpose: to remind Ucranianos of that spirit of resistance that keeps them united. It’s interesting to see how this place, which used to be criticized for its oppressive atmosphere, became the heart of national resistance during the most critical moments of the invasión rusa.
