First, Trump targeted and eliminated Soleimani on February 28.
Trump believed that internal conflicts within Iran were intensifying, which could lead to the current regime being leaderless and a change of power.
However, Trump’s strategy was somewhat self-centered. He thought all old men were as resilient as him, and believed Soleimani was the sole core figure.
In fact, Soleimani was 86 years old and reportedly in poor health. To some extent, Soleimani might have sacrificed himself, using his death to paralyze Trump. The result was that Qasem Soleimani’s son, Qasem Soleimani Jr., directly took over, and the current Iranian regime has persisted until now.
Phase One mainly involved assassination operations, motivated by pushing for regime change in Iran.
