Just updated my SASSA details and realized a lot of people get confused about the whole process, so here's the real breakdown. Whether you're on a permanent grant or SRD, the banking details update works differently, and it matters because getting this wrong means delayed payments.

For permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you can't do this online—you literally have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your ID, a recent bank statement (stamped, less than 3 months old), or a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name only. They'll give you a form, process it, and send it to the bank. Takes up to 21 working days, so if you need it done for next month's payment, submit before the 15th.

Now, if you're on SRD (that R370 grant), this is where it gets easier. The whole thing is online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they SMS you a secure link, you click it and update your banking details there. The account has to be in your name—no joint accounts or third-party nonsense. Give it a few days to weeks for the bank to verify, then you're sorted for future payments.

Phone number changes are just as important because that's how they send you verification codes and payment alerts. For SRD, use their contact details page—enter your ID and application ID, add your new number, they'll send an OTP to confirm. For permanent grants, either call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or just visit the office in person.

Honest tip: stick to the official SASSA website and channels only. There are dodgy websites out there pretending to help with SRD banking details updates and phone number changes—total scam territory. Go direct through the official portal or the office, and you'll be fine.
