Just went through updating my SASSA banking details and it's actually pretty straightforward once you know what to do. If you're on a permanent grant like the old age or disability grant, you'll need to head to your nearest SASSA office in person - they won't let you do it online unfortunately. Bring your original ID and a copy, plus proof of your new bank account. A stamped bank statement from the last three months works, or you can get a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name. They're strict about this - no joint accounts or anything like that.

The staff will give you a Payment Method Change Form to fill out, and then they send everything to the bank for verification. This takes up to three weeks usually, so if you want the change to kick in next month, get it done before the 15th. Otherwise you'll be waiting another cycle for your payments to go to the new account.

For your cellphone number, you can either visit the office again or call their helpline at 0800 60 10 11 if it's just a simple contact update. They've been pretty helpful when I called.

Now, if you're getting the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier because everything is online. You go to the official SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure link via SMS. Click that link and you can update your banking details right there. Same deal though - the account has to be in your name. The verification takes a few days to a couple weeks after you submit.

For changing your phone number on the SRD grant, use their contact details portal on the same website. You'll need your ID and Application ID, then enter your new number. They send you a one-time PIN to verify it's actually your phone. Pretty secure setup honestly.

One thing - make sure you're always using the official SASSA website and links. There are fake sites out there trying to scam people's information, so don't fall for that. If the online process gets frustrating, just call the helpline or visit an office in person. It takes longer but at least you know it's legit.
