Choosing a buy-now-pay-later app can be quite confusing. It's convenient when you don't have cash on hand, but fees and screening processes are often concerns. I’ve tried several recently, so I’ve summarized my recommendations based on actual usage.
First and foremost is whether you can use it immediately. Paidy and Atokara can be used within an hour of registration, which is really helpful when you're in a hurry. Also, fees. Many apps offer free bank transfer payments, but convenience store payments usually cost around 300–400 yen, so be careful. For small amounts, the fee burden can become quite significant.
When choosing a recommended buy-now-pay-later app, it’s important to match it to your usage style. Do you need installment payments, or is a lump sum payment sufficient? With Paidy, you can split payments up to 12 times for free, and Famipay also charges no fees for up to two installments. Conversely, services like Score Postpay and Kuroneko Daikin Postpay do not support installment payments, so they’re better suited for people who can prepare a lump sum.
From the perspective of recommended buy-now-pay-later apps, the number of stores where you can use them is also crucial. NP Postpay is available at about 200k stores, offering a wide range of options. However, BASE’s Pay ID is exclusive to BASE users, so it’s limited to BASE shops.
Each has its pros and cons, but personally, if you’re choosing based on apps that offer zero fees with bank transfer payments and good installment options, Paidy or Famipay are safe bets. They also allow you to manage payments within the app and offer point rewards. Atone also has relatively low fees at 99 yen and offers good point return rates. Ultimately, I think the best choice depends on the stores you frequently use and your preferred payment methods.
