Just went through updating my SASSA details and honestly, it's not as complicated as people make it sound. Here's what you actually need to know if you're wondering how do i update my sassa details.
So if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't do this online - you have to visit your local SASSA office in person. No way around it. Bring your original ID and a copy, plus proof of your new bank account. They want either a bank statement from the last three months or an official letter from your bank showing the account is active and in your name only. They won't touch joint accounts or anything in someone else's name.
Once you're there, ask for the Payment Method Change Form. The official fills it out, sends it to the bank, and then you wait. Takes up to 21 working days usually. Pro tip though - if you want the change to show up next month, get your request in before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
For your phone number, same deal - go to the office and let them know. Or you can call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 and they'll guide you through it. Some stuff can happen over the phone but they might still ask you to come in.
Now if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 relief), this is way easier. Everything's online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, you click it, update your bank details, and done. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. Same rule though - account has to be in your name.
For changing your phone number on SRD, go to their contact details page, enter your ID and application ID, put in your new number, they send you an OTP to verify, and you're set. If the online thing isn't working, just call them or visit an office.
One thing - be careful with fake websites. There are scam sites pretending to update SRD details. Always use the official SASSA portal. And if you're doing the cash send option instead of bank transfer, your phone number has to be RICA-registered in your name.
Honestly, the hardest part is just getting to the office or dealing with hold times on the phone. But once you know how do i update my sassa details, it's straightforward. Just have your documents ready and you're good.
