Just updated my SASSA child grant banking details and realized the process is actually different depending on which grant type you have. If you're on the permanent grants like the old age or child grant, you pretty much have to go in person to your local SASSA office – can't do it all online unfortunately. They'll have you fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and you need to bring your ID and recent bank statement (stamped one from the bank, not older than 3 months). One thing they're strict about: the account has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything. Takes about 21 working days for the bank to verify the new details, so if you want the change to show up next month, submit before the 15th.
Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's way more straightforward – you can actually change your bank account details online through the official SASSA SRD portal, which is honestly pretty convenient. You input your ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, and you just update your account info from there. Same rule applies though: account must be in your name. The verification takes a few days to a couple weeks.
Phone number changes are similar – permanent grants need you to visit the office or call the helpline (0800 60 10 11), but SRD has its own contact portal where you can update it online with an OTP verification. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website, not some random link, because there's apparently fake sites out there trying to scam people's details. It's a bit tedious if you're updating your child grant to a new bank account, but at least the process is pretty straightforward once you know what docs to bring.
