Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially when you need to change your bank account or phone number. The process is actually different depending on whether you're on permanent grants or the SRD R370.
For permanent grants like old age or disability, you literally have to go in person to a SASSA office—can't do it online. You'll need your ID, proof of the new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months), and they'll verify everything. Takes up to 21 working days after submission. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
Now if you're on SRD, it's way different. The whole thing is online through their portal. You enter your ID, they send you an SMS link, you click it and update your bank details there. Same rule though—account has to be in your name, no joint accounts. For changing your phone number on SRD, you can use their contact portal, enter your ID and application ID, put in the new number, and they'll send an OTP to verify. Much faster than the permanent grant process.
One thing people keep getting wrong: don't use fake websites trying to help you update SRD status or change bank details. Scammers are out there. Always use the official SASSA portal. If you're stuck, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office in person. Honestly, for anything complicated, going in person is probably your safest bet even if it takes longer.
