Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details when they need to change banking details or their phone number. The process is actually different depending on which grant you're getting, and it matters because delays can mean missed payments.
If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office - no shortcuts online. You'll need to fill out a Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID and proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works). They send it to the bank for verification which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to apply the next cycle, otherwise you're waiting another month. And remember, the account has to be in YOUR name only - no joint accounts or third-party stuff.
For the SRD R370 grant though, it's completely different because everything is online. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure SMS link. Click it, enter your new bank details, and you're done. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify. Same rule applies - account must be in your name.
Phone number changes follow a similar split. Permanent grants? Call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. SRD grant? Use their contact portal - enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, they send you an OTP to verify, and that's it. One heads up though - there are sketchy fake websites pretending to be SASSA trying to steal info, so always use the official links.
Basically, the key is knowing which grant you have because the process changes how you change banking details and contact info. Don't try shortcuts or you might mess up your payments.
