I just started to check what happened with the holiday on March 24 because several colleagues had doubts about the payments. It turns out the law is pretty clear: national holidays like this one are unmovable, so they don’t change dates. The interesting part is that the government decided that the 23rd would be a non-working day for tourism purposes, which allowed many people to have those four straight days off.

The legal difference between a national holiday and a non-working day is important. In March, the 24th is a full holiday, so if you work that day you get paid double. On the other hand, on the 23rd, since it’s only a non-working day, it depends on the employer whether they make you work or not, and if you do, you receive your normal salary. Banks, education, and public administration were the ones that took the most advantage of these March holidays to get a full break.

I was surprised to see the whole year’s calendar. Among the important holidays are April 2 for Malvinas, May 1st, and July 9th. Basically, you have to be paying attention because some holidays are transferable and others are not. In any case, these March holidays are already over, but hey, at least now I know how all this works legally.
