On March 10th, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India arrested Ayush Varshney, Chief Technology Officer of Darwin Labs and the technical architect of the GainBitcoin Ponzi scheme, at Mumbai Airport as he was attempting to flee to Sri Lanka. Varshney is accused of developing the MCAP token and technical infrastructure for the scheme, and of defrauding over 100,000 investors through fake Bitcoin cloud mining from 2015 to 2018, involving a total amount of up to $2.1 billion. This is the first time a major suspect has been detained since the case was consolidated and heard by the Supreme Court of India.
