Headquartered in Portland, the robotic agriculture startup Canopii has developed a fully automated greenhouse system that requires no human intervention, enabling the entire process from planting to harvest. The company, founded by David Ashton, produces up to 40,000 pounds of herbs and specialty vegetables annually, using very little water and occupying an area equivalent to a basketball court. Canopii has raised approximately $3.6 million (mainly through grants) and is currently preparing to build its first commercial farm in Portland, with plans to expand through franchising in the future. Compared to its vertically integrated agriculture peers that have received substantial venture capital, Canopii adopts a cautious and efficient capital operation model.
