Nepal's stance on the global cryptocurrency ban
If you are a resident of Nepal and want to buy cryptocurrency, you need to know that Nepal is one of the few countries that has implemented an absolute ban. This means that the production, holding, trading, and use of cryptocurrencies are completely prohibited in the country. Such restrictions affect millions of crypto enthusiasts in dozens of countries worldwide, and Nepal is a representative example.
Why is Nepal on the global ban list?
Currently, 51 countries and regions worldwide have implemented some form of regulation or ban on cryptocurrencies. Among them, Nepal is one of the nine countries and regions with the strictest measures, which have enforced an absolute ban. Other countries with similar stances include Algeria, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Qatar, and Tunisia.
The bans in these nine countries cover all stages of the cryptocurrency lifecycle — you cannot legally buy, hold, trade, or use any form of digital assets. In contrast, the other 42 countries adopt a de facto ban approach, often allowing individuals to hold cryptocurrencies but prohibiting banks and financial institutions from participating in crypto activities and banning domestic operations of exchanges. Countries like Kazakhstan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Nigeria fall into this category.
Core considerations behind strict global bans
The main reasons governments enforce these strict cryptocurrency restrictions are based on several concerns:
For Nepal, these policies reflect a firm stance on protecting financial order and maintaining economic security. If you are in Nepal or plan to purchase cryptocurrencies locally, understanding these bans is crucial, as violating these regulations could lead to legal consequences.
