CoinWorld News reports that Vitalik Buterin stated that in the discussion of Ethereum’s consensus mechanism, there is a proposal to replace the current finality component Casper FFG with a new one called Minimmit. He believes that Casper FFG uses a two-round finality mechanism (validators need two signatures to complete “proof” and “final confirmation”), while Minimmit only requires one signature to achieve finality. As a trade-off, Minimmit’s fault tolerance threshold will be reduced from 33% in Casper FFG to about 17%. Although the fault tolerance ratio is lowered, Minimmit is more likely to keep the network in a “multi-chain competition rather than incorrect final confirmation” state under various attack or client vulnerability scenarios, which is easier for the community to coordinate and recover. He considers that avoiding finality in a short period after an erroneous block is safer and more recoverable, so he believes Minimmit may be better overall in security trade-offs.
